Hands of Light has partnered with The New Hampshire Childbirth Educators Association(an ICEA affiliate) to offer  a certificate program in Childbirth Educator Training. Midwives, doulas, maternity nurses, educators and others who work with birthing women will find this program valuable to prepare them to teach natural childbirth and parenting classes.

No pre-requisites are required.

Our intent is to aid the educator in learning adult education principles and assist in developing effective teaching techniques. The program addresses  course organization, teaching aids, technological developments and teaching skills. Classroom format will include role playing, group discussion, audio-visuals, and lecture. The course will cover the following subjects and others:

The Childbirth Educator - Philosophy, roles, history and trends in childbirth practices.

The Expectant Parents - Pregnancy, childbirth and early parenting experiences. The physical and emotional postpartum adjustments. Grief counseling. Infant massage.

Supportive Techniques for Childbirth - Pain management. Relaxation and visualization methods. Alternative options.

Promoting Wellness - Nutrition, exercise and support systems. Sexuality.

The Classroom - Class development, ice breakers and group dynamics. Tools of the trade. Alternatives and consumer rights during pregnancy and childbearing experiences.

The Community - Politics in childbirth education. Setting up a practice and marketing strategies.
